Typically, a "direct install" is an active cost- and energy-saving piece of equipment usually installed in-unit. By "active," we mean something that the occupant of the home uses rather than a passive device like insulation, which homeowners don't regularly interact with. Some examples include faucet aerators, showerheads, and thermostats.
